Remembering Geoff Lydon

I attended the funeral of Geoff Lydon this week.

He was the consummate professional and a superb temporary works engineer. He was excellent at his job, quick to teach, and slow to anger. Greatly loved by the people he trained and brought through as Site Engineers at Wates. A truly good man – one of the very best.

The service was beautiful and attended by about a hundred people, many current and former colleagues from Wates – a mark of great respect for the man we all knew. I remember looking at one of his projects, I forget where it was but it had a huge brickwork tower, supported in mid air by this lattice of steelwork, while the new building was built around it. Amazing! It just didn’t look possible, but Geoff did it.

The abiding picture I have of him is working away on his wonderful hand drawn coloured drawings, surrounded by models of tower cranes and temporary works machines. His input won many tenders and projects.

He will be greatly missed.

My very best wishes to his family at this sad time.

Rest In Peace Geoff.
