And the winner is…

…the UK construction industry!

Check out this out…

Making “Building Information Modelling” happen – ….The BIM Task Force and Technology Strategy Board collaborating to deliver Classification and the Digital Plan of Works , “A digital tool for building information modelling SBRI competition for contracts February 2014”

You can see further details here and download the flier….https://www.innovateuk.org/competition-display-page/-/asset_publisher/RqEt2AKmEBhi/content/a-digital-tool-for-building-information-modelling?p_p_auth=ZQRaG38I

As a CIOB rep on CPIc I’ve been involved a little with the Uniclass 2 process but only on the edges, and it has been clear for a while that Uniclass 2 has needed a fresh impetus to get it to where we need it to be. However, to be honest I wasn’t always convinced about the BIM Taskgroup’s involvement but having now seen the details come out, I think this could well be the game changer that we need for BIM in the UK in 2014. So hats off to the Taskgroup on this one, this is a very astute and clever move that is to be richly applauded and I think deserves all our support, whatever we can contribute.

To me this is rather like the Star Wars defence initiative that the US started decades ago, only this time I think this one will happen!

The combination of a Digital Plan of Work tool combined with digital classification systems that communicate across the processes with all stakeholders is the missing link for Level 2 and provides the platform for Level 3 and beyond. Most of us aren’t really interested in classification but we use it in various contexts everyday. At the supermarket, online, at the bank, in business, we don’t necessarily need to be a classification geek but we do need it to “just work”. And I imagine that’s what we’ll get, working on our laptops, tablets and smartphones. #everywhereallthetimeBIM.

But….here’s the rub.

Just a word for whoever “wins”this competition ….firstly good luck! You will need it….

Secondly as much as it needs to be a commercial venture and turn a margin, this isn’t merely something at that level. This is the development and production of something that will change the industry for the better, and open up access to collaborative working at a level of performance that we can only dream about at the moment. But this is actually going to happen and become reality! Truly game changing and evolutionary step changing stuff.

So the real winner here, I hope, will truly be the UK industry. And this will be a global step change too for UK PLC. It will be interesting to see how the competition develops, and who gets the privilege of doing this. Let’s hope we get international class teams and consortia of people competing for this, who actually want to make a difference and improve our industry and the way we work. What a potential legacy!

And remember………………..we’ll all be watching you!

So no pressure then….!

All the very best for 2014!

Cheers

J.
